Site Updates

Ok so I’ve been working away on the server that hosts this website, mostly behind the scenes, and its nearing completion. The server is based on a desktop install of Ubuntu, this is because it also acts as my media server/player. The following is a list of some of the major packages I have been using, there has been a fair bit of configuration and custom page writing that I will cover at a later date.

  • XBMC – playing/sharing media
  • Samba – windows shares
  • Apache/Mysql/PHP – websites
  • Postfix/Dovecot/Squirrelmail – email
  • Sbnc – irc proxy
  • VLC – streaming video
  • Icecast/Darkice – streaming audio
  • Lirc – infrared tx/rx
  • ProjectM/Jack – visuals on a live audio source

My best success so far has to be the web page, and windows vb application, that controls my Sky+HD box. The page is written in PHP and uses an image map over a picture of the remote, this then sends the appropriate irsend command to the usb infrared tx/rx. I would like to write a simple android application to do the http posts, as I have done with vb, but this is very low priority at the moment.

I am pretty happy with the way things are going, I’ve always been very into little projects and what I can do with Free and Open Source Software. I’m currently most worried about how to populate this site with meaningful posts and not just waffle.
